In brief
- D5 Render can import 3ds Max files either through direct import or through live synchronization with the D5 Converter plugin.
- D5 Converter requires 3ds Max 2014-2016 and 2018-2026, VRay 3.6 or later or Corona 6.0-13.0, together with D5 Render 2.6 or later.
- The plugin can sync model, material, camera and light data separately; only the light's type and position are transferred, while its parameters must be set up inside D5.
- Models can be exported in .d5a or .skp format; no texture compression is applied during export, and group hierarchy can be preserved.
D5 Render offers two main methods for quickly bringing 3ds Max scenes into a real-time rendering environment for architectural and interior visualization projects: direct file import and live synchronization via the D5 Converter plugin. This guide covers both methods step by step, aiming to ease the transition to D5 Render for offices working in 3ds Max.

Exporting in .d5a and .skp formats
Common mistakes and their solutions
Requirements
Before you begin, make sure the following version compatibilities are met:
| Software | Supported version |
|---|---|
| 3ds Max | 2014-2016, 2018-2026 |
| VRay | 3.6 and later |
| Corona | 6.0-13.0 |
| D5 Render | 2.6 and later |
D5 Converter can be downloaded and installed from d5render.com/download; running the downloaded .exe file completes the installation.
Step by step: Direct import
Choosing a model file with the "Open" option in D5 Launcher starts a new D5 scene. Models imported this way are placed at coordinate 0,0,0 by default and come automatically locked.
On the scene editing screen, the Import button in the top left lets you bring in multiple files at once. Models added this way come unlocked and appear in the Imported list in the left sidebar.
Ready-made models such as plants, characters and furniture can be downloaded from the D5 Assets Library and placed in the scene; these models are also added unlocked.
Step by step: Live synchronization with D5 Converter
Once D5 Converter is installed, D5 Render can be launched from within 3ds Max with a single click, syncing the viewport. The max file must be saved before starting synchronization.
When additions, deletions or structural changes are made to the model, the Data Sync button transfers only the changed models and materials to D5; scene parameters already set up in D5 are preserved.
With the View Sync feature, the 3ds Max and D5 viewports work in tandem, providing real-time camera angle tracking between the two applications.
With Scene Sync, Standard, VRay or Arnold cameras can be transferred to the D5 scene list with a single click.
The Lights Sync button transfers Standard, Corona or VRay lights to D5 with their type and position information; however, specific parameters like color temperature and cone angle need to be reconfigured inside D5. For example, a VRay Plane light corresponds to a Strip light in D5, while a Corona Sun light also maps to a Strip light.
Export options
D5 Converter can export 3ds Max models directly in .d5a format; this process does not compress texture resolution, and the project can be exported in full or only as a selected portion. The Auto Collapse feature has been added to resolve common issues like model drift and UV distortion, and it remembers the last setting used. If the preserve group hierarchy option is checked, the group structure appears intact when the .d5a file is imported into D5. Models can also be exported in .skp format with a texture size of 512x512 or 1024x1024 for use in SketchUp or D5 Render.
What this means for architecture and interior design workflows
For architecture and interior design offices working with 3ds Max, D5 Converter removes the need for constant exporting just to get a render preview. Thanks to Data Sync, only changed geometry and materials are transferred, saving time on large projects. However, it should be noted that light parameters are not transferred automatically and must be reconfigured within D5 — an extra step particularly for offices doing detailed work with VRay or Corona lights. Another limitation to keep in mind is that bone animation transfer via FBX is not supported, and conversion to ABC format is required instead.
Common mistakes
Not saving the max file before starting synchronization can lead to error messages.
In files with multiple materials of the same name, it's easy to forget that materials can be overwritten if the "Automatically save scenes after sync" option is disabled.
When choosing the Sync Method, "New method" is designed for new projects that haven't previously been connected with plugin versions 2.98 and earlier; for projects previously connected with the older plugin, the "Compatible method" should be used instead, and this distinction can be easily overlooked.
For locked models, clicking directly is enough to select a material, while for unlocked models the material picker tool must be used — a point that's often missed.
Next steps
Once model and scene synchronization is complete, it's possible to present the project to clients as an interactive virtual tour using D5 Render's Spatial Tour feature. Since Spatial Tour contains spatial information, it supports advanced features like 3D dollhouse view, location switching and measurement; once the project is generated on the client side, it can be rendered and shared via a link or QR code through D5 Showreel.

Since 3ds Max is still the primary modeling tool in many offices in Turkey, the live synchronization offered by D5 Converter reduces the need for constant file exporting just to get a render preview, and it can save time especially on projects with heavy revision traffic. However, the fact that light parameters aren't transferred automatically means an extra manual step for studios doing detailed lighting setups; this should be factored into workflow planning.
In terms of hardware and licensing, compatible VRay or Corona versions need to be kept up to date alongside D5 Render 2.6 and later; offices working with older project files should pay attention to the "Compatible method" option to maintain compatibility with previous integrations. For small offices and students in Turkey, this integration can be a practical starting point to test how D5 fits into their workflow before committing to a separate render engine license.
Frequently asked questions
Which 3ds Max versions does D5 Converter work with?
D5 Converter supports 3ds Max 2014-2016 and 2018-2026, VRay 3.6 and later, Corona 6.0-13.0, and D5 Render 2.6 and later versions.
Are lights in 3ds Max fully transferred to D5 Render?
