In brief

  1. Cine Camera Actor helps replicate real-camera behavior with Filmback, Lens, and Focus settings.
  2. The Live Link plugin lets you bring animation and camera data from external sources into Unreal Engine.
  3. You can monitor camera framing using the Picture-in-Picture preview in the Viewport.
  4. If multiple network adapters are present for a Live Link Message Bus connection, check the Unicast Endpoint setting.

What will you learn in this guide?

In this guide, you’ll create a Cine Camera Actor in Unreal Engine and adjust the framing, lens behavior, and focus for an architectural scene. Then you’ll enable Live Link and follow the basic steps for receiving camera data from a compatible external source. The goal is to explore ways to position and configure a scene camera manually, and understand how an external camera feed appears in the editor.

A Cine Camera Actor is a specialized Camera Actor designed to replicate real-camera behavior through Filmback, Lens, and Focus settings. Live Link provides an extensible interface for bringing data from external sources into Unreal Engine via plugins. Used together, these tools let you fine-tune framing in architectural visualization and receive camera motion from a supported external source.

Requirements and preparation

The source guides do not specify a particular Unreal Engine version or account requirements. So no version number or account requirements are given here. You’ll need access to plugin activation and editor settings in your project. For a Live Link connection, the external application sending the data must also be set up to transmit it to Unreal Engine through Live Link.

Before you start, make sure your scene contains the architectural elements you want to frame and that you’re working in a level where you can place the camera. If you plan to transfer external data, complete the source application’s connection setup separately. The general Live Link guide does not provide setup steps for a specific third-party application, so application-specific settings are not covered here.

1. Create and place a Cine Camera Actor

There are several ways to create a Cine Camera Actor. To add one through the Place Actors panel, go to Window > Place Actors from the main menu. Drag a Cine Camera Actor from the Cinematic section of the panel into the level. Alternatively, open Quick Add from the Main Toolbar and select Cine Camera Actor from the Cinematic list.

If you’re using Sequencer, you can also create a camera with the Camera button in the Sequencer toolbar. This creates a temporary Spawnable Cine Camera Actor in the current sequence, and the new camera becomes that sequence’s active camera cut. The Create Spawnable Cameras preference in Editor Preferences controls whether cameras are created as Spawnable in Sequencer.

To adjust the framing, right-click the camera in the Viewport and select Pilot CineCameraActor. This mode shows the Viewport from the camera’s perspective. Ctrl + Shift + P pilots the selected camera; Ctrl + Shift + C toggles the camera view. To stop the Viewport from following the camera’s position when exiting pilot mode, use the exit icon in the camera piloting menu.

2. Adjust framing, lens, and focus settings

The Filmback setting in the selected camera’s Details panel offers real-camera body presets that affect sensor dimensions and the basic aspect ratio. When you select a preset, Sensor Width and Sensor Height update accordingly; Sensor Aspect Ratio is shown as a value calculated from the selected sensor dimensions.

You can select real-lens presets in the Lens Settings section. These settings affect values such as Focal Length, FStop, and Diaphragm. For an architectural interior shot, first set the camera position and sensor ratio in the scene, then adjust the focal length to get the desired view. Since the source does not recommend an ideal focal length for a specific interior, it would not be appropriate to give a fixed value here.

Use the Focus Method options to set focus. When Manual is selected, Manual Focus Distance sets the focus distance relative to the camera position; you can also use the eyedropper in the Viewport to select an object and focus on that point. The Tracking option follows an actor as the focus target. Do Not Override disables the camera’s depth-of-field effect, while Disable turns depth of field off completely.

A Picture-in-Picture (PIP) preview may appear in the bottom-right corner of the Viewport for the selected Cine Camera Actor. The window shows the camera view and information such as the camera name and Filmback. Since the preview can affect performance, check the Preview Selected Cameras setting under Edit > Editor Preferences > Level Editor if you don’t need it. You can also adjust the window size with Camera Preview Size.

Open the Plugins window through Edit > Plugins. Enable Live Link Plugin in the Animation category. Once the plugin is enabled, open the Live Link Connection window from the Window menu. Use the + Source button to add the appropriate source type for the external application sending the data.

The Live Link Client manages incoming data sources and streams called Subjects. A Subject might contain camera or character data, for example. In the Subjects panel of the connection window, each Subject has a name, role, and data status indicator. A green indicator means data is being received; a yellow indicator means no data has been received within the specified time.

When working with camera data, you can add a Live Link Controller component to an Actor and select a connected Subject through Subject Representation. Unreal Engine’s guide gives an example of adding a Live Link Controller to a Cine Camera Actor to move the camera and change its focal length using an external source. The evaluation options for a camera feed include Engine Time, Latest, and Timecode. Don’t use Timecode unless it’s set up with the engine’s Timecode provider.

4. Check common issues

Live Link Message Bus Source uses UDP Messaging and, by default, uses the first network adapter it finds. If the computer has multiple adapters, data may not arrive from the expected source. To use a specific adapter, edit the Unicast Endpoint value under Edit > Project Settings > UDP Messaging. In the guide’s example, adding “:0” to the adapter’s address lists all ports.

If the connected source isn’t visible, check whether the external application is configured to send data to Unreal Engine. If the source appears but the Subject’s status is yellow, the connection may be established, but data may not have arrived within the specified time. Checking the data stream, selected Subject, and network settings separately can help pinpoint the issue.

The PIP preview may affect performance while it’s open. Consider using it while adjusting the framing, then turning off Preview Selected Cameras if you don’t need it. Also, don’t confuse Manual focus with Tracking focus: Focus Method must be set to Tracking to follow an actor.

Impact on architectural visualization workflows

Cine Camera Actor gives architects, interior designers, and visualization teams working on interior, façade, or walkthrough shots a way to test Filmback, lens, focus, and post-processing settings on a single camera. If an external application that supplies camera data is ready, Live Link can be used to transfer motion into Unreal Engine. The sources do not provide information about required hardware performance, licensing terms, or a compatibility list of third-party applications; these points should be verified separately before starting a project.

Next steps

First, lock in the camera position and Filmback settings, then try different lens and focus options separately. Next, enable Live Link independently of the camera feed and verify the source and Subject status. If you’re using multiple network adapters, check Unicast Endpoint. Finally, observe the performance impact of the PIP preview and clarify which external application will provide the camera feed for your team.

For architectural visualization teams, the practical value of Cine Camera Actor is that it makes it easier to test framing, lens, and focus settings through a single camera. Live Link can be useful if you already use an external application that provides camera motion; however, the information in the sources isn’t enough to make a decision about licensing costs, hardware requirements, or application compatibility.

Offices and students in Turkey should first test whether the plugin and data source work in their existing project, using a small scene. It’s also important to observe the performance impact of the PIP preview. Before making an investment or production-pipeline decision, verify that the external application in use supports Live Link data transfer and confirm the network configuration.

Frequently asked questions
