When preparing architectural visuals in Twinmotion, first determine the scene’s purpose, then adjust the environment, camera, and rendering method accordingly to streamline your workflow. Epic Games’ official documentation covers different parts of this process, from general preferences and Path Tracer settings to ambient lighting and exporting render layers. The steps below show how to consider these options when preparing interior and exterior visuals.
Version note: The document detailing Path Tracer and media image settings is for Twinmotion 2022. The Preferences, Ambience, and render layers documents do not specify a version in their source text. Menu and setting names are therefore given as they appear in the relevant official documentation.
1. Configure scene preferences and navigation
Open the Preferences panel with the
Ctrl+Pshortcut or go toEdit > Preferences. Here, you can choose millimeters, centimeters, meters, feet, or inches as the unit system. The document lists meters as the default. Using a consistent unit setting in measured scenes makes dimensions easier to understand when reviewing the scene.Set
Orbit modein theSettingstab according to how you want to navigate the viewport.Around the mouse pointeris the default;Around selectionorbits around selected objects and overrides the selected orbit mode. These settings affect how you inspect the scene in the viewport, not render quality. In the
Savesection, check whether autosave is enabled and review its interval. The document gives a default interval of 15 minutes and a limit of 3 saved files. Once the file limit is reached, new saves overwrite existing files.Use the options in the
Qualitytab to manage viewport performance and image quality. This tab does not determine the quality of exported images, videos, panoramas, or sequences; the document states that exported media is rendered at Ultra quality.
2. Set up lighting and the environment for the visual’s purpose
To access the Ambience panel, click the Properties button at the bottom, then open the Ambience section in the Scene panel. The panel consists of the Env, Camera, Render, and FX tabs. You can also edit a media item’s ambience settings by selecting it, whether it is an image or a video.
For ambient lighting, consider which of
Dynamic sky,Sky Light HDRI, orBackdrop HDRIbest suits the scene. Dynamic sky supports changes to the sun and time. With the HDRI options, lighting and reflections are affected by the HDRI information; Dynamic sky’s ambient light can also contribute to illumination.Match the sun’s position in the scene to the date, time, and location. According to the Ambience documentation, the location map determines the sun’s position based on the selected place’s coordinates. This also lets you assess the effect of shadows around the scene as you work with the sun.
In scenes where changes in brightness cause problems, consider whether to use
Auto-exposurebased on your needs. The Twinmotion 2022 document says that auto exposure calculates the scene’s overall brightness and adjusts exposure accordingly, and can be useful when moving between interior and exterior spaces. The source does not specify which tab contains this setting. When preparing a fixed composition, also check how auto exposure affects the result.Take performance and visual limitations into account when using
Volumetricclouds. The official document says these clouds are more realistic than 2D clouds, but have a higher performance cost. Blocky artifacts may appear in Path Tracer mode; the document suggests loweringDensityas a temporary workaround.
| Setting | Recommended value | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Preferences › Quality | Does not determine export quality | Affects only the viewport; exported media is rendered at Ultra quality. |
| Path Tracer › Samples per pixel | 1–8192; as needed | A higher value may reduce noise, but can increase render time. |
| Path Tracer › Max bounces | 1–100; as needed | Limits how many times light bounces between surfaces; higher values can increase render time. |
| Grass fading | Near: 15 m, Medium: 30 m, Far: 50 m | Near can help improve viewport performance and frame rate. |
| Reflection probes | 64, 128, 256, 512, or 1024 | Sets reflection resolution; 1024 is recommended for mirrors. |
3. Test Path Tracer settings in a controlled way
The Twinmotion 2022 document describes the option to enable or disable Path Tracer for media images, along with the settings associated with this method. Samples per pixel is listed with a range of 1–8192, and Max bounces with a range of 1–100. More samples may reduce image noise, while a higher bounce value can increase render time. It is therefore useful to change settings incrementally during tests and assess render time alongside the visual result. The official document does not recommend ideal values for any specific project type.
Denoiser can be enabled or disabled. The Emissive setting controls how emissive materials contribute to indirect lighting. The source notes that small, self-illuminated objects can increase image noise, particularly in interiors. Higher values for Aliasing filtering can produce a smoother but also blurrier result; lower values can produce a sharper image, but more aliasing along edges.
Evaluate shadow distance according to the scale of the composition. The document explains that a shorter distance can make shadows more detailed, while a longer distance can reduce their detail. Reviewing the role of near and distant objects in the frame can help you set this option for the scene.
4. Export render layers for post-production
Render layers let you export selected objects on separate layers for later editing in image- or video-compositing software. You can create up to five render layers in a scene at a time; a Sky layer is added automatically for the sky.
Select the objects you want to separate in the viewport or Scenegraph. To place a group of objects on the same layer, you can collect them in a container in the Scene graph.
Open the
Layer IDsection in thePropertiespanel and checkEnable. Then select the layer ID you want to use. By default, selected objects are assigned ID 1.Select the media and required layers in the export panel. The default output is a black-and-white mask. To get a standard render layer with an alpha channel, clear
Export as masks.Use PNG or EXR for images. When exporting videos and sequences with render layers, save them as a PNG or EXR image sequence. JPG cannot contain an alpha channel, so it is not suitable for standard render layer use; the source recommends the black-and-white mask option if JPG is required.
Each additional render layer can increase render time; the increase can be especially noticeable in Path Tracer mode. Also, in real-time Standard and Lumen modes, objects must be on the same render layer to benefit from reflections and global illumination. Fog and weather effects cannot be exported as separate layers, and transparent objects may not behave correctly as holdouts.
Impact on architecture and archviz workflows
For interior visualizations, ambient lighting, exposure, reflections, and noise settings should be considered together. For exterior scenes, Dynamic sky combined with date, time, and location information helps with sun and shadow studies. Render layers can be used when different groups of objects need to be edited separately later, but their impact on render time should be factored into planning.
Hardware requirements and licensing terms are not detailed in these documents. However, the documents clearly state that higher Path Tracer sample counts and additional render layers can increase render time, and that Volumetric clouds have a higher performance cost. The balance between quality and render time should therefore be checked with test renders on the intended scene and system.
Common mistakes
Assuming that viewport Quality settings also change exported images. The official document says these settings affect only the viewport.
Increasing sample or bounce values in Path Tracer without considering render time. Both settings can increase it.
Choosing JPG for layered output. Use PNG or EXR when an alpha channel is required; consider the mask option if using JPG.
Assuming render time will stay the same as the number of render layers increases. Each additional layer can increase render time, especially in Path Tracer mode.

For architecture firms and visualization teams in Turkey, it is important not to reduce these settings to a single “best” recipe. Managing viewport quality according to the task at hand, not confusing it with final output quality, and testing Path Tracer in a controlled way can make the workflow more predictable.
The trade-off between render time and quality becomes especially apparent with high sample counts and additional render layers. Teams should test their hardware capacity and deadlines on their own scenes; if using render layers, they should plan from the outset for PNG/EXR requirements, alpha channels, and the impact of the layer count on render time.
