In brief

  1. Cine Camera Actor is a specialized Camera Actor designed to mimic real-world camera behavior through filmback, lens and focus settings.
  2. You can add a camera to a level through Place Actors, Quick Add or Sequencer.
  3. When you create a new camera in Sequencer, a Camera Cut Track is also added if one does not already exist.
  4. The camera’s PIP preview can affect performance; you can change this setting in Editor Preferences.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to add a camera to a scene with Unreal Engine’s Cine Camera Actor, adjust framing with filmback and lens settings, configure focus, and add the camera to a Level Sequence through Sequencer. Cine Camera Actor is a specialized Camera Actor designed to mimic real-world camera behavior. The source documentation does not specify a particular Unreal Engine version or account requirement, so no version or access requirements are assumed here.

Requirements and preparation

You’ll need an Unreal Engine project and a level to edit. Camera properties are controlled in the Details panel, while the image is viewed in the Viewport. Timeline and sequence editing are handled in Sequencer. The sources do not indicate that a special plugin is required for these steps. However, to record an actor’s movement with Take Recorder, available in Sequencer’s playback controls, the Take Recorder plugin must be installed; this is not a prerequisite for basic camera setup.

If you plan to use look-at tracking or focus tracking, the actor to track must be present in the level. If you don’t select an Actor to Track in Look at Tracking, the camera points toward the world origin, or (0, 0, 0). Make sure your target is ready before enabling the feature. The source pages do not specify Unreal Engine version, pricing or user account requirements.

1. Add a Cine Camera Actor to the level

There are three ways to add a camera. For the first method, open Window > Place Actors from the main menu. Drag a Cine Camera Actor from the Cinematic category into the level.

For the second method, open Quick Add in the Main Toolbar. In the list that appears, select Cinematic, then Cine Camera Actor. The third option is to create a camera through Sequencer: clicking the Camera button in the Sequencer toolbar creates a temporary Spawnable Cine Camera Actor for the current sequence and makes that camera the active camera cut for the sequence. Whether the camera is added as a Spawnable can be controlled using the Create Spawnable Cameras preference in Editor Preferences.

To work from the level camera’s point of view, right-click the camera in the Viewport and select Pilot CineCameraActor. You can also use the Ctrl + Shift + P shortcut to pilot the selected camera. Pilot mode makes the Viewport follow the camera’s position and orientation. When you exit the mode, the Viewport is no longer attached to the camera, which remains selected.

2. Adjust the preview, framing and lens

When you select a Cine Camera Actor, a Picture-in-Picture (PIP) preview appears in the lower-right corner of the Viewport. It displays the camera’s image and some properties, such as filmback. When you select multiple cameras, a separate PIP window can appear for each. You can pin a window to keep it visible when its camera is not selected; PIP is not displayed while the camera is in pilot mode.

To change preview options, go to Edit > Editor Preferences and find Preview Selected Cameras and Camera Preview Size in the Level Editor section. Preview Selected Cameras is enabled by default; according to the documentation, this live preview can reduce performance. If the Viewport responds more slowly in a complex scene, try turning off the preview or changing its size. The source lists 5.0 as the default value for Camera Preview Size.

Use the Filmback and Lens Settings sections in the Details panel to adjust framing. Filmback provides preset camera body options; the selected setting affects sensor width and height. Sensor dimensions also determine the basic field of view and aspect ratio. You can choose a preset lens in Lens Settings, and adjust focal length, F-stop and aperture properties there. To create a fixed-focal-length lens look, set the minimum and maximum focal lengths to the same value.

3. Configure focus and camera direction

Focus Method in Focus Settings determines depth-of-field and focus behavior. Do Not Override disables depth-of-field effects from the camera but allows effects from other sources. Manual lets you set the focus distance relative to the camera’s position. Tracking follows a selected actor as the focus point. Disable turns off depth of field entirely and disables effects from other sources as well.

For manual focus, set Focus Method to Manual and enter a distance in Manual Focus Distance. The distance is in centimeters; for example, a value entered in meters can be converted to centimeters. You can use the eyedropper next to the field to select a point in the Viewport and focus on that object.

To track an actor as the focus point, select the Tracking method and specify the target in Actor to Track. Relative Offset shifts the focus point relative to the tracked actor. Draw Debug Tracking Focus and Draw Debug Focus Plane help you check where the focus is positioned.

Look at Tracking is different from focus tracking: it changes the camera’s direction toward a target actor, not the focus distance. This setting is in the Current Camera Settings section of the selected camera’s Details panel. After enabling Enable Look at Tracking, select a target in Actor to Track. To make tracking gradual, set Look at Tracking Interp Speed to a value greater than zero; according to the source documentation, a value of zero corresponds to instant tracking.

4. Edit the sequence in Sequencer

Sequencer is the main interface for editing Level Sequence assets. The Camera button in the toolbar creates a new Cine Camera Actor; if a Camera Cut Track does not already exist, one is added and references the camera. Drag the playhead along the timeline to move to different points in the sequence and review changes in the Viewport. Ctrl plus the mouse wheel zooms the timeline; the Home key resets the view and range.

You can define a selection range on the timeline to review a specific section. Use this range to loop playback within the selected section or select only the keys and sections in that area. Adding custom markers to the timeline helps highlight important frames. You can assign a frame number, label, comment and color to markers. The documentation recommends using markers with Determinism Fence enabled at important frames; this feature is intended to ensure Sequencer components are evaluated at the marker’s position.

What does this offer for architectural visualization workflows?

Cine Camera Actor helps set up framing in interior, residential and architectural presentation scenes using filmback, lens and focus controls. You can prepare alternative views with different camera settings, while PIP windows make it easier to compare selected camera views. The camera and Camera Cut Track added to Sequencer provide a foundation for working with camera cuts on the timeline.

There are also some practical considerations. Live camera previews can affect performance, and if no target is specified for Look at Tracking, the camera points toward the world origin. The source documentation also does not explain project version or hardware requirements. Before production, check that the Unreal Engine version you’re using is compatible with your project settings and test Viewport performance on your computer.

Common mistakes

  • Don’t confuse the PIP window with the piloted camera view: PIP is not visible while the camera is in pilot mode.

  • Don’t leave Actor to Track empty when Look at Tracking is enabled; otherwise, the camera points toward the world origin.

  • Keep in mind that Manual Focus Distance is measured in centimeters.

  • If live preview reduces performance, check the Preview Selected Cameras setting.

  • If the timeline view is lost, press Home to reset the view and range.

Next steps

Prepare several framings in the same scene using different filmback and lens settings, then compare the images. Next, try the Manual and Tracking focus methods separately to see how they affect the target object. To edit camera movement or cuts on the timeline, create a Level Sequence in Sequencer; mark important frames and review them during playback. Keeping a record of the camera values used in the project can help maintain consistency across scenes and presentation angles.

3dEditor’s assessment

For architecture firms and visualization teams, Cine Camera Actor’s practical value lies in its ability to shape framing with filmback, lens and focus controls. Used with Sequencer, it provides a useful foundation for managing different camera angles and cuts on the same timeline.

It makes sense for teams in Turkey to test camera previews in their own project versions and observe the performance impact before incorporating them into their production workflows. The source documentation does not provide pricing information. Its free license does not provide information about Unreal Engine product pricing or terms of use; these should be evaluated separately.
